VMware server 2.x on Ubuntu server 8.04

Yesterday I upgraded my VMware server 1.x to version 2.0. I am using a minimal Ubuntu server 8.04 (LTS) dedicated for this role. The upgrade, pretty similar to a new install, was uneventful.

Observations:

  1. In server 2.x a webinterface is the standard way to manage your VMware server. The VMware console is no more in use. Its functions have been moved into WebAccess.
  2. You have to install a firefox or IE plugin for a VMware remote console to virtual machines.
  3. The WebAccess looks like the old 1.x Mui, the VMware Console and the ESX 3.5 WebAccess combined. It feels sluggish and generates seemingly random error messages.
  4. If you don’t like WebAccess you have an escape when you are running a windows client. You can use the (Windows only) VI client to manage VMware server 2.
